Why Personality Matters

What does your personality type have to do with your career choices? The more you know yourself the more opportunities you will be able to recognize what will work for you! Certain personality traits and styles often find themselves in certain types of occupations and workplaces more often than in others.

In order to be both content and fulfilled in the workplace, it is crucial to match your occupation and workplace environment to your personality type. When your personality style is aligned with your occupation your job satisfaction is most likely to be at its highest . You wouldn't want to be an extremely introverted personality and choose a career that requires lots of public speaking to large crowds.

When deciding on a career path there are many factors to consider but a prominent one should be your personality style.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a popular personality style indicator for assisting in career decisions.

Your personality type is made up of four letters, one chosen from four categories:

Introverted vs. Extroverted: How you expend energy

Sensing vs. Intuition: How you process information

Thinking vs. Feeling: How you make decisions

Judging vs. Perceiving: How you see the world

Homework/Exercise:

Go take 3 separate Myers-Briggs tests and compare the results. Make sure to also look at what career paths are suggested. There are many free tests available online, we have several good options on our Resource Page. These tests and exploration should take you 1-2 hours to complete. Give the answers to questions careful thought and complete 3 in order to ensure accuracy.
